The battle between love and addiction

I'm writing about my experience with addictions and what it truly means to love someone one and because of this I don't believe you truly love someone if you can't stop your addiction or stop it from hurting the ones you love. I believe my father would disagree and say he loves us all very much and that "it's just hard" or "you don't understand." He thinks caring from time to time and doing things from time to time means he loves us with everything he has but he's never been willing to stop drinking for his love for us. He may love us in his own way but not enough and apparently never enough. He thinks he has done every thing he possibly could for us. I do believe it takes time, these things usually always take time but at some point it has to stop, it never does for him.
